Same-Day Dental Crown and Milling Machine in Modern Dental OfficeWhen a tooth is cracked, decayed, or damaged, waiting two weeks for a crown to return from the lab means wearing a temporary restoration that may shift, crack, or feel uncomfortable throughout. The traditional crown process has never been built around convenience; it has been built around necessity. Today, advances in CAD/CAM dental technology have made it possible to design, mill, and place a permanent crown in a single appointment, without sacrificing the quality patients deserve.

At Spring St. Dental in Bastrop, Texas, we use CEREC technology to give our patients a better experience from start to finish. CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, allows our team to restore damaged teeth the same day using digital scanning, computer-aided design, and in-office milling all in one visit. If you have been putting off a crown because of the time commitment, our porcelain crown services may be exactly what you have been looking for.

What Is CEREC and How Does It Work?

CEREC is a chairside CAD/CAM system that replaces the conventional crown workflow with an all-digital process. Instead of biting into putty impression material and sending a mold to an outside lab, the dentist uses a handheld intraoral scanner to capture a precise 3D image of the prepared tooth and surrounding dentition. That scan is fed into design software, where a custom crown is modeled to fit the exact contours of your bite.

Once the design is approved, the digital file is sent to an in-office milling unit. The machine sculpts the crown from a solid ceramic block, typically taking less than 30 minutes. After any minor adjustments and final polishing, the crown is bonded in place, completing the entire restoration in a single appointment.

Why Digital Impressions Improve Accuracy

Traditional impressions rely on physical materials that can shift, distort, or capture air pockets during the process. Digital scanning eliminates those variables entirely. A 2020 clinical study published in the National Library of Medicine found intraoral digital scans required significantly less time than conventional methods, and chairside crowns produced through digital workflows showed no statistically significant difference in marginal or internal fit compared to lab-fabricated restorations.

That matters to patients in practical ways. A crown fitting accurately the first time is less likely to cause bite problems, sensitivity, or early failure. The digital process also allows our team to make real-time adjustments before the crown ever leaves the design software, reducing the need for in-mouth corrections after placement.

The Precision Behind the Milling Process

Once the crown design is finalized, the milling unit translates the digital file into a physical restoration using diamond-coated instruments. The ceramic blocks used in CEREC restorations are manufactured with consistent density, which means the final crown performs predictably under daily chewing forces. This consistency is one of the reasons all-ceramic CEREC crowns have a strong track record for durability.

Single-Visit Crowns Without Temporary Restorations

One of the most patient-friendly advantages of CEREC is the elimination of temporary crowns. In the traditional process, a temporary is placed at the first appointment to protect the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is fabricated. Temporaries can loosen, fracture, or cause sensitivity, and patients must manage them carefully for up to two weeks.

With CEREC, there is no temporary. The permanent crown is placed the same day the tooth is prepared. Patients leave with a complete, bonded restoration and no follow-up appointment required for crown placement.

Is a CEREC Crown Right for You?

CEREC crowns are suitable for a wide range of restorative needs, including teeth with significant decay, cracked or fractured teeth, teeth following root canal treatment, and situations where an existing crown has failed. The ceramic material is biocompatible and designed to match the shade and translucency of neighboring teeth. Our team will evaluate your tooth and bite during your visit to confirm the best approach for your situation.

The procedure follows the same preparation steps as a traditional crown. The tooth is shaped to accommodate the restoration, scanned, and the crown is designed and milled while you wait..
