Sedation Dentistry in Bastrop, TX

Did you know that an estimated 40 million Americans avoid dental care because of fear and anxiety? Without regular dental visits, your smile’s brilliance may diminish, and your oral health can suffer.

Sedation dentistry, a term describing the anxiety management techniques used to manage patient pain and anxiety, allows our dental team to help people relax while at the same time allowing patients to respond to physical stimulation and verbal command. At Spring St. Dental, we provide comfortable dental sedation options to help you receive the care you need without fear.

When Should You Consider Sedation Dentistry?

You deserve a healthy, fabulous smile. Putting off routine checkups and minor repairs can result in the need for much more extensive therapy. If you have avoided treatment because you dislike dental visits, dental sedation can allow you to comfortably receive the care you need. Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who have:

  • A high level of fear or anxiety
  • Suffered past traumatic dental experiences
  • Difficulty in getting numb
  • An overactive gag reflex
  • Very sensitive teeth
  • Complex dental treatment needs
  • The need to squeeze several procedures into a limited time period
  • A fear of needles and shots
  • A strong dislike of the noises, smells, and tastes associated with dental care
  • TMJ-related difficulties, where it is uncomfortable to open the mouth for extended periods

Flexible Payment Options for Your Dental Care

Quality dentistry shouldn’t be limited by insurance restrictions. We accept all major dental insurance and offer multiple financing solutions to fit your budget.

  • Out-of-network benefits accepted—we handle the paperwork
  • Plan for Health membership: no maximums, no waiting periods
  • CareCredit and Alpheon financing with flexible terms
  • Transparent cost estimates before treatment begins

What Dental Sedation Options Are Available?

There are three common types of sedation. Here at Spring St. Dental, we offer inhalation and oral conscious sedation to help alleviate most dental anxieties for routine treatment. If a deeper IV sedation is required for a specific procedure, we can refer you to our great team of oral surgeons who provide this service.

Inhalation sedation, such as nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas or happy gas), provides relaxation during dental procedures. Often, your dentist will also provide a local anesthetic with laughing gas to avoid any pain.

Oral conscious sedation, which involves pills or liquid taken through the mouth, allows patients to enter a state of total relaxation during dental treatment. Usually, patients also receive an injection of local anesthetic as well.

Intravenous (IV) sedation involves sedatives administered directly into the bloodstream through the vein for the deepest level of sedation without general anesthesia. This type of sedation is generally reserved for very invasive dental surgeries, like the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, and is generally not needed for routine treatment. As we do not offer IV sedation here in the office, if you require it, we can refer you to our team of oral surgeons.

Before any dental procedures commence, the sedating effects of the medicine will cause the patient to become drowsy and relaxed. The dental team will attach the patient to a monitor so the dentist can keep track of vital signs. At the completion of the dental procedures, you will be allowed to recover from the effects of the sedation before leaving the office with a friend or relative. Feel free to resume normal activities sometime in the next 12 to 24 hours, but someone should stay with you for the first few hours at home.

Is It Really Sleep Dentistry?

Though sedation dentistry has also been referred to as sleep dentistry, this terminology is inaccurate. Patients will feel very drowsy during the procedure and will not remember most of their time in the dental chair. However, you are actually awake throughout the treatment process.

Sedation dentistry describes the methods used by dentists to manage patient pain and anxiety while at the same time allowing the patient to respond to physical stimulation and verbal command.

Giving some form of a sedative medication to patients during dental treatment is what sedation dentistry is all about. It causes relaxation and decreases anxiety so that the patient is comfortable and the dentist can work safely and efficiently. Sedation dentistry is most popular for those who experience mild to moderate dental anxiety, patients who have dental phobias, and children who are frightened by dental visits.
There are a number of advantages that sedation dentistry offers to both patients and dentists. Here are some reasons that it is popular with patients:

  • Pain is diminished so that the patient hardly feels the instruments, needles, or anything else as part of the treatment.
  • Awareness is reduced so that that patient doesn’t realize exactly what is happening and doesn’t keep track of the time spent in the dental chair.
  • Anxiety is lessened so the patient feels calm and carefree while undergoing treatment that normally might cause upset.
  • Side effects are minimal and rare, making sedation dentistry both safe and effective.
  • The gag reflex is reduced so patients who might normally have problems gagging during treatment are able to undergo procedures without issues.
  • Time is saved for the patient because often all treatments can be performed in one office visit, instead of having to make several trips and miss more time from work or other activities.

Dentists enjoy benefits of sedation dentistry as well:

  • Patients are more cooperative and able to sit still during treatment, allowing dentists to get the job done with less trouble.
  • Multiple procedures can be done in a single office visit, so the dentist can accomplish more in a single time slot.
  • Reflexes of the patient are more controlled so that movement is less haphazard and the dentist can work more efficiently.

If you are about to undergo a dental therapy that necessitates the use of sedation dentistry, especially IV sedation, there are definitely some important questions you should ask your dentist prior to the procedure. Remembering to ask these questions can be difficult, especially if you are feeling anxious or ill at ease with regard to the treatment.

Use this guide to give you some of the most important questions you might not have thought of or remembered to ask:

  • What type of sedation will I be receiving?
  • What risk factors – even rare ones – are associated with this type of sedation?
  • How long will the treatment take, and during how much of that time will I be sedated?
  • How will the sedation be administered?
  • Who will give me the sedation and monitor it during my treatment?
  • What safety measures do you have in place in case of any medical emergency?
  • What would happen in the case of a cardiac emergency or a seizure?
  • Who is trained in CPR and other life-saving skills?
  • What kind of preparations do I need to make prior to my treatment?
  • Should someone accompany me to be present during the treatment?
  • How soon following treatment will I feel awake and alert?
  • May I drive myself home afterward?
  • What kind of pain can I expect after my treatment?
  • How will I manage my discomfort?
  • What kind of aftercare does my particular treatment require?
  • What signs should I look for that would lead me to contact you for a follow-up?

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of sedation dentistry does Spring St. Dental offer?

Spring St. Dental offers inhalation sedation using nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation with pills or liquid medication. Nitrous oxide provides light sedation where effects wear off within 15-20 minutes, allowing you to drive yourself home. Oral conscious sedation creates a deeper state of relaxation and requires someone to drive you home. Both options help patients relax during routine treatments while allowing you to respond to verbal commands. For deeper IV sedation needed for invasive procedures like impacted wisdom teeth removal, we refer patients to our trusted oral surgeon partners who specialize in this level of sedation.

Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry benefits patients with dental fear, anxiety, or past traumatic dental experiences. It’s ideal for those with overactive gag reflexes, very sensitive teeth, difficulty getting numb, or TMJ issues that make it uncomfortable to keep the mouth open for extended periods. It also helps patients needing multiple procedures in one visit or those with strong fears of needles, dental sounds, smells, and tastes. Nearly all dental procedures can be performed with sedation at our Bastrop practice, including cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, and dental implant placement. If any of these situations apply to you, sedation dentistry can help you receive the care you need comfortably.

Is sedation dentistry safe at your Bastrop dental practice?

Yes, sedation dentistry is extremely safe when administered by trained professionals like our Bastrop dentists. We carefully review your medical history and current medications before recommending any sedation option. During your procedure, we continuously monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels using advanced monitoring equipment. Our dental team has extensive training in sedation techniques and emergency protocols. Common mild side effects include temporary drowsiness, dizziness, or dry mouth, which resolve quickly. Serious complications are extremely rare. We follow strict safety guidelines established by the American Dental Association to ensure the highest level of patient care in Bastrop, Texas.

How much does sedation dentistry cost and is it covered by insurance?

The cost of sedation dentistry at Spring St. Dental varies depending on the type of sedation used and the length of your dental procedure. Insurance coverage depends on your plan and whether sedation is considered medically necessary—some plans cover it for severe anxiety or special needs patients. As an out-of-network provider, Spring St. Dental accepts all major dental insurance and maximizes your benefits by filing claims on your behalf and providing detailed cost estimates before treatment begins. We offer flexible financing through CareCredit and Alpheon, and our Plan for Health membership with three tiers (Child, Adult, and Perio plans) provides comprehensive discounts with no annual maximums or waiting periods. One major advantage of sedation is the ability to complete multiple procedures in a single visit, which is cost-effective since you only pay sedation fees once.
